Nevada Brain Death Dispute - Aden Hailu

On April 1, 2015, 20-year-old Aden Hailu, a University of Nevada, Reno freshman, admitted herself to Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center due to abdominal pain.

But during exploratory surgery to locate the cause of her illness, Aden had a cardiac arrest.  This resulted in significant brain damage. She was later diagnosed as being in a persistent vegetative state.  Apparently, even more recently, Aden was diagnosed as dead (by neurological criteria).

The doctors at Saint Mary's informed the family that the ventilator would be removed on July 2 at 5 PM. That afternoon a petition from the father was heard in Washoe County District Court.  A ruling has not yet been issued and it looks like the matter is continued until July 21.
