Last month, I published a New England Journal of Medicine Perspectives article on "Making Medical Decisions for Patients without Surrogates." This followed-up from my more comprehensive treatment (here and here) in The Journal of Clinical Ethics.
As I continue to work on this important yet under-examined problem, I was pleased to notice that one of the very best resources on the issue was just made more available. The ABA Commission on Law & Aging 2003 report by Karp and Wood, Incapacitated and Alone: Medical Decision-Making for the Unbefriended Elderly, was just made readily available for free in PDF.
