In "The Doctor" Dr. Murray becomes a symbol of professional devotion.
The painter, Luke Fildes, recalls a personal tragedy. In 1877, his first son, Philip, died at the age of one. The character and bearing of their doctor, throughout the time of their anxiety, made a deep impression on Fildes. The British Journal of General Practice analyzes what the painting can teach about the practice of medicine today.
